Oil Painting on Artist Panel "Scenic Beauty"

Here is my newest oil painting, this is also done on an artist panel/board.  Using the panel is wonderful, the paints flow so smoothly over it and if I need to ship it, I won't have to worry about tears in the canvas or any type of breakage.  It's a tough base for a painting.  This is called Scenic Beauty, I used a photo from a friend on facebook.  What a wonderful sky.  The first picture is my painting, the second is the photo I used.

This is the first landscape I've done in a vey long time.  I've never painted on Artist Board before and I love it.  I love working in oils, the paint flows so smoothly and the drying time is perfect for me, I like to be able to mix my colors right on the painting.  So here it is, Autumn Day.

How to carve an Egg

I've been getting alot of questions on how I carve an egg, so I'm going to try to give everyone a step by step look at what goes into it.

Items needed, steady hand, lots of coffee, ciggaretts, dentist drill, egg, diamond burrs, wrist brace and lots of time.

I'm going to be using an Emu Egg on this demonstation.  I use a whitewash to sketch an outline of what I want to put on the egg.  My ideas tend to evolve as I work so I don't try to put down too much, just the basics.

Using a dentist drill, I lightly carve into the shell, short shallow strokes at first, carving deeper as I get the feeling of how thick the shell is to add detail.  An Emu egg starts out a dark blue/green and gets lighter the deeper you carve.

As I work, I wet the egg down to take off the extra dust and to see the detail better.  Keep in mind the finished piece will have the color of the wet egg.  If you look at this picture you can see the whiter spots, those are the edges that I will be cutting out.  I will carve deeper in these spots to make the cutting easier.

After you have all your detail finished, it's time to cut out the areas that you want.  Make sure you don't have too many thin areas. When this is fiinished you will have to wash the egg.  Lightly, using your fingertips or a soft paintbrush, clean the inside getting rid of any loose skin.  Let it dry.  Using a clear finish paint the interior to make sure any pieces that are still loose will lie flat.  Let dry.  Paint the interior with a white gloss, this will probably take a few coats of paint.  Now to finish it off.

There is always a hole on the bottom of the egg, to cover it I used a gold flower and Swarovski Cyrstals, clear 5mm than green fire opals 3mm.  I put aquamarine crystals in the openings of the gold flower.  From the center of the flower I hung a pewter owl and a tag that says Made with Love.

I decided to have this egg hang from a stand so I put a eyehook on the top.  Using Swaroyski Crystals I surrounded the base of the hook with aquamarine 3mm crystals. I put three coats of a clear finish on the outside.  This not only gives the piece a nice glow, but it also strengthings the piece.

Working on a lovely Ostrich egg carving, it's an owl with it's wings spread.  Will get it finished tonight and get some pictures taken to post.

 Here it is, finished with white enamel and on the bottom I put a wonderful silver flower with emerald crystals.  Hanging from the lower back branch is a lovely pewter owl and a pewter tag that says "Made with Love.  It is signed and dated on the bottom.  An original piece that will not be reproduced.  Price is $175.00, $13.95 shipping

This is titled "Golden Trellis" it is a handcarved Goose egg that I covered with gold leaf.  I put a row of clear crystals and a row of topaz crystals above and below the carved portion of the egg.  The carving is a flowered covered trellis.  While you can't get as much detail on a goose egg as you do on an ostrich egg, they are still fun to carve.  This is a one of a kind item, it will not be reproduced.   The price for this egg is $55.00 plus $5.94 shipping.         

This is titled "Wolves" It is a carved ostrich egg that I also put goldleaf on. It is a very lovely piece. It measures approx. 6.5" in height and approx 16" around. This is an original work of art and will not be reproduced.

This is titled Fairy Roses, It is a carved Ostrich Egg placed ontop of another Ostrich Egg than besparkled. It is a very unique item and will never be reproduced.

This is a piece I turned into a clock, a beautiful Owl, the piece is titled "Bright Eyes" It is painted with Acrylics on a slice of wood. I really love to paint wildlife and I find Owls are so much fun, the variety in their feathers and getting the eyes just right.

This is an Emu Egg, about the same in height as an Ostrich egg, though not as wide or thick. It's different in it's color, a very deep green/blue. As you carve this egg the color lightens. It's an interesting medium to work with. I have carved two Unicorns, one male, one female, surrounded by hearts.

This is "Butterfly Garden" by Dodie

This is an Ostrich Egg that I carved Butterflies and Flowers into. It took me about 10 hours to make this one. It's three different types of Butterflies and some of the Flowers that attract Butterflies thistle, coneflower and lobelia. They are some of my favorite flowers I have lobelia and coneflowers in my garden each year. I like to use Ostrich eggs because you can get more detail into them than with the goose eggs. They do take a bit longer to carve but alot of fun to make ( also they tend to make quite a bit of cleanup afterword.
